A Bigger, Better Space for Cats: What Our New Community Cat Room Means for Felines—and Our Community

At North Country Animal League, we are always asking one simple question: How can we do better for animals?

Our new Community Cat Room is one clear answer.

This new space represents a major step forward in how we care for cats, how we match them with families, and how we increase our impact across northern Vermont.

When complete, this room will allow NCAL to take in and adopt out approximately 100 additional cats every year, increasing our lifesaving impact for cats by 30%. But the benefits go far beyond numbers.

What Is a Community (Free-Range) Cat Room?

A community cat room is a shared, open space where compatible cats live together rather than being housed individually in cages. These rooms are carefully designed with vertical space, hiding areas, enrichment, and quiet zones so cats can choose how—and when—they interact.

For the right cats, this type of environment is far more natural and humane.

Which Cats Thrive in Community Rooms?

Not every cat is suited for a free-range environment, and thoughtful placement is key. Community cat rooms are ideal for:

  • Social, people-friendly cats who enjoy interaction
  • Cats who are comfortable around other cats
  • Young adults and playful personalities
  • Cats who become stressed or withdrawn in cages
  • Longer-stay cats who benefit from enrichment and movement

Shy, fearful, medically fragile, or highly stressed cats will always have access to quieter, private spaces at NCAL. The goal is not “one-size-fits-all,” but the right environment for each cat.

Why Community Rooms Are Healthier for Cats

Traditional cage housing, even with excellent care, can be stressful for many cats. Prolonged stress can suppress the immune system, slow recovery, and negatively affect behavior.

Community rooms help address this by offering:

  • More movement and exercise, supporting physical health
  • Choice and control, which reduces anxiety
  • Mental stimulation and enrichment, preventing depression and frustration
  • Healthier social behaviors, when cats are appropriately matched
  • Lower stress levels, which can reduce illness and length of stay

Healthier cats are happier cats, and happier cats are adopted faster.

Better Adoption Experiences for People, Too

From an adopter’s perspective, community rooms are transformational.

Instead of meeting a cat through cage bars, visitors can see cats:

  • Playing
  • Relaxing
  • Interacting naturally
  • Choosing to approach people

This leads to stronger emotional connections, better matches, and more successful long-term adoptions.

A 30% Increase in Impact—for Cats and the Community

With the addition of this new Community Cat Room, NCAL will be able to help approximately 100 more cats each year, representing a 30% increase in our overall impact for cats.

That means:

  • More cats are receiving care
  • Shorter lengths of stay
  • Faster pathways to adoption
  • Greater capacity to support community needs

It’s not just about space; it’s about using space smarter to serve animals better.

A Reflection of Who We Are Becoming

This project reflects NCAL’s evolution into a true Animal Resource Center, one that prioritizes animal welfare, behavioral health, community access, and long-term solutions.

Every improvement we make is rooted in compassion, evidence-based practices, and a deep belief that animals deserve environments where they can thrive, not just survive.

We can’t wait to welcome cats, and the people who love them, into this new space.

Stay tuned as we bring the Community Cat Room to life.
