Rider Ability Guide
To decide which group is appropriate for you or your child, please refer to the following chart. If you or your child seem to be falling between program levels, it is best to choose the lower level.

Level | Program | Description of Level |
---|---|---|
1 | Beginner | Never ridden before |
2 | Beginner | Walking and trotting (mostly on the lunge line) |
3 | Beginner Novice | Walking and trotting off the lunge line; maintaining control and steering; trotting poles |
4 | Beginner Novice | Walking, trotting and beginning to canter (mostly on the lunge line) |
5 | Novice | Walking, trotting, cantering while maintaining control and steering; cantering poles |
6 | Novice | Walking, trotting, and cantering with the ability to regulate pace; maybe starting over small jumps and trotting without stirrups |
7 | Intermediate | Walking, trotting, cantering, maintaining pace and doing simple lateral work (leg yields); trotting and cantering without stirrups; jumping small courses |
8 | Intermediate | Walking, trotting, cantering; ability to maintain control, sit a spook and work on more advanced lateral work; able to jump 2’6-3′ courses. *NCAL lesson horses do not jump above 2′. |
