Tips on Reporting a Found Pet

REPORT THE PET

Report the pet as found on Petco Love Lost, where animal shelters and neighbors post lost pets.

Check for I.D.

Check for a collar or tags. If the collar or tag has a phone number, try calling and texting the number.

Check Microchip

If safe, have the animal scanned at a local veterinary clinic or the NCAL during business hours. Once you have a microchip number, you can look up the pet’s registered information at petmicrochiplookup.org or by calling 1-866-597-2424 and try to contact the owner.

Take a Walk

Be mindful of safety and physical distancing, take found dogs for a walk on a leash in the neighborhood where they were found. Talk to the neighbors to see if anyone knows the dog, and be on the lookout for any gates left open that the pet may have escaped from.

Social Media

Post a clear picture and location where the animal was found on local social media pages. Facebook, Front Porch Forum, community platforms, and email lists are great places to start. Post in the Lost and Found sections, and make sure nobody has posted on the “lost” section an animal matching the one you found.

How to Report Stray Cats & Dogs

NCAL Stray Cat Process

Stray cats brought to NCAL will be scanned for a microchip and the owner contacted if a chip is located. If not, NCAL will post the found cat on social media, on the shelter lost and found board and will screen any calls for missing animals. If the cat is not claimed after the 5 day stray hold, NCAL assumes legal ownership of the cat. A behavior assessment will be done and the cat will either be put up for adoption, placed in a foster home or transferred to a partner shelter for adoption if there are no behavior or health concerns that would prevent the cat from being adopted.

NCAL Stray Dog Process

In order for a stray dog to be brought to NCAL, it must come through the local Animal Control Officer (ACO) or the local police department. This is to assure that the dog isn’t reported as missing and to make sure that the local town is notified and aware of the stray dog due to the requirement for dogs to be licensed. Due to the fact that we do not have a full time veterinarian on staff, we are not able to intake any dogs that are aggressive or not able to be handled without first being medicated.

Once the ACO or local police reach out to NCAL, we will coordinate a time to bring the dog in to be held at NCAL for 5 days. NCAL will post the found dog on social media, on the shelter lost and found board and will screen any calls for missing animals. If the dog is not claimed after the 5 day stray hold NCAL assumes legal ownership of the dog. A behavior assessment will be done and the dog will either be put up for adoption, placed in a foster home or transferred to a partner shelter for adoption if there are no behavior or health concerns that would prevent the dog from being adopted.
